Designer Mary-Louise Gustafsson lives and works in Stockholm Sweden carrying on the long and proud history of Scandinavian furniture design. Having earned her education from the Royal Arts College in London, and studying throughout Denmark, Sweden and even Japan, Gustafsson brings a well traveled sensibility to everything she creates while retaining the stand out features of classic Scandinavian design like clean forms and economy of materials.
Gustafsson’s products have character and a graphic sensibility that makes them stand out in a sea of lesser designs. Products like the ‘Slacker’ chair, a beanbag like flexible seat atop a rolling chair base. Or ‘We Felt Like It,’ a bright, decorative rug. Or ‘Mop Flip Flop,’ a set of cleaning shoes that invoke the power of your own body. Or ‘Manana Lamp,’ a lamp that looks lie it was pulled off a film set or comic strip.
As Marie-Luis Gustafsson herself says,“I rarely get an idea as quickly and directly as this, but the Manana lamp came like a flash. I had worked too hard prior to an exhibition, and I drew my own body in different shapes in order to relax and get some perspective. And the form just stepped right out at me, out of the sketch book, and I rushed to the workshop!â€
